The Fall of Nzeribe:- Part 3 BY OKAZU POWERS

The Fall of Nzeribe:- Part 3
"The presidency may turn out to be a one horse race if OBJ decides to play a Mandela, that is not to seek renomination but to sponsor IBB as pundits will say to return the compliments IBB paid in 1999. Or, on the other hand, IBB may decide to renew his support for OBJ as in 1999 to ensure his re-election in exchange of support for year 2007. Will they make a deal or fight for it? What is it to be? What is the choice? Six of one or half a dozen of the other? Do not ask me."
Arthur Nzeribe (The News, March 12, 2001)
POWER PLAY CHAPTER 7: "MY TIME AGAIN"
On November 2nd 1998, Authur celebrated his 60th Birthday where He boasted that He has invested over 10 billion Naira in the Nigerian political sphere.
In 1999, In one of the great ironies of life, Nzeribe who worked tirelessly in support of the elongation of various military regimes was among the chief beneficiaries of democracy.
Nzeribe thus arrived at the Senate not as a representative of Orlu constituency for that was merely on paper. Nzeribe was in the Senate to represent Nzeribe.
The Senator's true intentions quickly unfolded once he got to the Senate in 1999 and the Senate Presidency was zoned to the South East where he hails from. Nzeribe's attempt at clinching the coveted position, was dead on arrival as Obasanjo who suffers no fools gladly put him in his proper place. Eventually Senator Evan Enwerem was OBJ's anointed.
His Rage knew No bounds. Money was never the problem as regards lobbying but Obasanjo knew him better.
As a proverbial Cat with Nine Lives, Authur attempted to get close to Obasanjo .He tried his best to establish close ties which was rebuffed and in apparent frustration, the maverick politician moved against Obasanjo where it mattered most.
Nzeribe moved for his impeachment in the floor of the Senate. You can imagine the guts Like the young Ghanaian Musician "Sarkodie" usually says "YOU KNOW SAY MONEY NO BE PROBLEM"
Hear him
In the Senate impeachment imbroglio against President Obasanjo, I believed in and adopted an opposition view from the Senate leadership. I practically implored every senator [THAT] I lobbied. Although, I am presently suffering an undeserved suspension, it is gratifying to be acknowledged as a principal factor in getting the Senate to realize that the impeachment plan was an ill wind, underserved and inspired by a hidden political agenda.
In the course of pursing this project, I have received a gift and donation of US$125,000,000.00 (one hundred and twenty five million United States dollars) from the AGUNZE TRUST. It is instructive that out of this fund, I have so far drawn only US$17 million (Seventeen million dollars) as follows:
(a) US$3.5 million 10/9/2002
(b) US$3.5 million 12/9/2002
(c) US$10 million on 14/11/2002
At a parallel conversion rate of N141 to one US dollar, I have at my disposal N2,397,000,000 (two billion three hundred and ninety seven million naira)
With such a huge Financial war Chest, He claimed to have lobbied 74 senators into an agreement to Impeach Obasanjo. However, It failed.
His ambition to become Senate President led to ibos producing 5 Senate Presidents in 8 years
– On October 18, 1999, dear Distinguished Senator helped to organise and indeed championed the impeachment of the first Senate President of the 4th Republic… arguing through a memo to all Senators that “It is for us to elect a Senate President that will work for us and not to be given a Senate President that will work with us for the Executive Arm. THIS LED TO THE IMPEACHMENT OF EVANS ENWEREM
Then His Friend and cartel man Late Chuba Okadigbo emerged senate President..Authur Nzeribe worked tirelessly for his impeachment
President… Dr. Chuba Okadigbo.
– It is equally on record that on 15 April 2000, our Distinguished Arthur Nzeribe brought a motion under section 143 of 1999 Constitution seeking the removal of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo from office as President by impeachment. In the said motion… Nzeribe proposed 15 impeachable offences against President Obasanjo and stipulated a time-table for his eventual removal.”
A Young 39 year Old Ayim Pius Ayim from ebonyi state was Elected into the Senate. His Pastor has made a prophecy that He would be Senate President. He was close to Authur based on the South East Caucus and Authur had alledged that Pius confided in him as an Elder Brother that His Pastor made a prayer and prophecy that he would become the senate president.
In 2000, At 40, Ayim Pius Ayim Became the senate President replacing Chuba okadigbo and Authur took note of it.
In 2002, While Authur was fighting the President silently, Authur claimed that The same Pastor made yet another Prophecy that Ayim Pius Ayim would become Senate President.
When the Impeachment move failed, All hell broke loose. Nzeribe was looking for a way to reclaim or rebuild a Non-existent or rather cumbling relationship with Obasanjo. In Politics "THERE ARE NO PERMANENT FRIENDS OR ENEMIES, ONLY PERMANENT INTEREST. He got access to Obasanjo and told him to be Careful of the senate President who was warming up to Replace him in 2003 and He started making moves underground moves to impeach Ayim. Nzeribe is allergic to good reputation, he has proceeded in the same manner to circulate his usual memoranda to all Senators detailing what he calls “iniquities of Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim”, In November 2002, Authur got an Indefinite suspension Which lasted for 9months on the grounds of Financial fraud of 22 million Naira.
From the Political Angle, Ayim claimed it was long over due for daring to move again The President in the impeachment motion..
Authur defended himself by pointing out the above Narrative saying that OBJ should be cautious of Ayim because The same pastor who had prophesied Ayim into becoming the Senate President has spoken again. This time,They want to take the Big Elephant Home.
Due This controversy and his stance on public officials not seeking a second Term(including himself), Ayim didn't run again for Re-Election knowing fully well that under Obasanjo's watch, He would fail woefully
Back to Nzeribe. In other to heal the emotional wounds he inflicted on Obasanjo, He became one of the biggest campaigners for Obasanjo's second term, not minding that a few months back he had leveled very weighty impeachment allegations against the Ogun General. That was vintage which became a public identity that Nzeribe that thrives in Controversial inconsistency.
This led to the preceding action that Nzeribe's latest mission in 2002 reincarnate the 'consensus candidacy' mantra into the lexicon of the 2003 electioneering campaign should be viewed. He stated that "nobody can stop us; it (the move) is in the constitution", referring to the Movement for National Consensus and Accommodation (MONAC) objective to ensure that President Olusegun Obasanjo is adopted as the sole presidential candidate in the 2003 presidential election.
With not much ado, the idea of consensus candidacy in a nation where there are multiple political parties sounds weird. This idea peddled by Nzeribe is a sure sign of his unique CREATIVITY AND INTELLECTUAL POWERESS.
To be continued
