BIAFRA: ORIGIN AND RESTORATION
By Cosmos George Oto'Obong
The name, Biafra was conceived on the 30th May, 1967 by His Royal Highness (HRS). Frank Opigo, Dawai III, Amananaowei of Angiama in former Rivers State, now in Bayelsa State.Opigo named Biafra after the Bight of Bonny Atlantic Ocean in Rivers State. Biafra comprises of the entire South Eastern region and some part of the Middle Belt, e.g., Ijaw, Igbo, Ibibio, Ikwerre, Ogoni, Efik, Urhobo, Ishekiri, Ogoja, and a few others.
The people of Biafra are friendly, accommodating and hospitable. They are good in business, labor, civil society organization, skills and resources and have over ten seaports that are vital in helping to build a more robust economy.
Vegetation is diversified. The delta parts have swampy vegetation with lots of lagoons, streams and beaches. Further inland is rich mangrove, rain forest vegetation and the Lakes in Uguta in Imo State and Enugu State.
Biafra is a tropical region. There are two main seasons in the year - the rainy season and the dry season or harmattan. Very heavy rainfall makes the rainy season (normally from March to October) while the dry season is marked by dry dusty wind (normally from November to February).
The Southern part of Biafra has longer rainy seasons. The weather is usually hot and humid in the delta parts. A normal day could be as warm as 350C.
The history of Biafra is a conglomeration of the history of the different people that make up the region. Every one of the many tribes that make up Biafra has its unique history with same dating back to B.C.
Over 50 different languages are spoken in Biafra. Some of the languages have several “dialects.” Thus you may find people from the same tribe (from villages about 2km apart) speaking completely different dialects of the same language and barely understand themselves.
English is the official language of Biafra. There is variety of English widely spoken and understood by even the uneducated ones. This is “Pidgin English,” Most native speakers of the English language have difficulty understanding this “dialect” of their language.
INTELLECTUAL STRUGGLE
The Biafran people had answers to their problem during the colonial era; to gain freedom and grow; but the British government decided to enslave and exploit their natural resources, from 1885 to date, through the Islamic Hausa-Fulani in northern part of Nigeria. The Fulani’s killed over 5.2 million Biafrans including women and children in a calculated genocide from 1967 to 1970. They confiscated all their currencies and limited each male Biafra to a total wealth of N40 naira which is less than a quarter US Dollar, to start life all over again. They deliberately stifled Biafra’s educational drive and killed off the six seaports in that region in a desperate efforts to discourage trade, industry and business; this is reason Biafrans are roaming around the countries of the world like bees in search of flower patches; they graze anywhere they find themselves, even as their fatherland is richly blessed with milk and honey.
The British control Nigeria oil and gas industry through the “Kaduna Mafias” which is made up of Islamic Hausa-Fulani leaders in the north - The Emirs, Sultans, ex-military Heads of State and some Retired Northern Military Generals; these people constitute the underground world that aims to Islamize and destroy the African continent. Nigeria is designed as a British cum Hausa-Fulani private property, in a master-servant political and economic relationship.
NIGER DELTA DOOM
In Nigeria, crude oil – hydrocarbon was first discovered in Akpa-Ekop in Akwa Ibom State in 1953, but commercial production was first carried out in Oloibiri in Bayelsa State in 1956, by Shell Petroleum and Development Company (SPDC). Yet, the people of Oloibiri are languishing in abject poverty with no development. The people source their drinking water from the same river where they defecate; the river is also polluted with hydrocarbon from oil operations. Hydrocarbons have adverse effect on sea lives which is the source of their livelihood.
Recently, the Federal Government of Nigeria established Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), to carry out developmental projects of the oil rich region, which the Nigerian government abandoned since the 60s. Today, the commission serves as conduit pipe for looters.
NDDC contracts are awarded at Abuja to top politicians, Islamic Hausa-Fulani leaders and government officials, like: Atiku Abubakar, Emirs, and Sultans, past military Heads of States, some retired northern military Generals and some House of Assembly members. These cartels sale contracts for 20% - 30% of original contracts value to portfolio contractors in Abuja without necessary technical-know- how
or partnership with competent firms. The contractors’ resale the same
contracts to other contractors and so on. These projects end up poorly
done or abandoned or no physical projects, but money is fully paid.
