• Urges Shell to stay off polluted sites in Ebubu

The spokesman of Ejamah community in Ebubu Eleme, Chief (Sir) Mimi Aaron Mimi has reiterated that he remains the authentic chairman of Ebubu Community Development Committee (CDC).
Chief Mimi who was reacting to a recent publication of Inside Eleme Newspaper on the dissolution of the former CDC and formation of a new one led by Engineer Onungwe Terry Chichi said the new move by the members of Ebubu council of chiefs and elders is unacceptable. He said the leadership of the committee still remains with him and pledged to continue working alongside members of his team.
Aaron Mimi, who queried the current CDC selection and inauguration, said the process was not transparent and hence is unacceptable as the venue and persons involved in the inauguration process lacked the capacity to do so. “My selection and inauguration was an open event where the entire Ebubu people and chiefs met at Ebubu town hall where it was unanimously agreed that I and others be given the responsibility of Ebubu Community Development Committee. It was an open process and not done in anybody’s house like how we just got the news that they gathered at James Bebe’s house and did a kangaroo appointment. I remain the CDC Chairman in Ebubu and will continue to carry out my duties and responsibilities”, he stated.
He said the purported dissolution of the CDC was not unconnected to the standing rift between the community and Shell Company over the oil company’s plan to gain access into the polluted sites in Ejamah community, which he and his team objected to before now. He said Ejamah had a case in court against Shell over the polluted sites which the community won, and the court ordered Shell to pay $122m to the community but Shell appealed to the Supreme Court.
Aaron Mimi maintained that Chief Isaac Agbara is no longer the paramount ruler of Ejamah community and cannot preside over issues on behalf of Ejamah people. He said the new paramount ruler of Ejamah community is Chief Peter N. Ogwu, even as the matter is pending in court.
He said his CDC was inaugurated on the 27th of July 2013 and wxpressed dissatisfaction with the chieftaincy institution in ebubu. According to him, the paramount ruler of Ebubu has not been seen over times stressing that his son Engr. James Bebe is not qualified to preside over the affairs of Ebubu people.
While urging to respect the court judgment given in favour of Ebubu people, Mimi further urged the oil company to henceforth deal with Chief Peter N. Oguru even as the matter is pending in court. He said his CDC was inaugurated on the 27th of July 2013 and expressed dissatisfaction with the chieftaincy institution in Ebubu.
According to him, the paramount ruler of Ebubu has not been seen over time, stressing that his son, Engr. James Bebe is not qualified to preside over the affairs of Ebubu people. While urging Shell to respect the court judgment given in favour of Ebubu people, Mimi further urged the oil company henceforth deal with Chief Peter N. Oguru on all matters and issues relating to Ejamah community. He said the move by Shell to use the polluted sites in Ejamah community for recreation centre will be resisted. “Shell has equally visited Eleme Local Government Chairman, Hon. Obarilormate Ollor just to find access to develop the polluted site. But it will not work. Let them go and face the case in court”, he said.
Mimi said that through his CDC leadership, there has been concerted effort to restore peace to Ebubu and improve on the infrastructural facilities in the area.
Also speaking, the Community Development Chairman of Ejamah Community, Chief (Hon.) Ntobari Ogosu in an interview questioned the modus of the new CDC in Ebubu clan. He said the process was not transparent as it did not reflect the collective view of the people. He said the entire public should disregard that CDC and work with the existing CDC led by Hon. Aaron Mimi.
Ogosu, equally called on the Ogoni clean-up team under the control of HYPREP to come and see the new chief of Ejamah community for a hitch-free operation. He said the polluted area by Shell in Ejamah remains a restricted area pending when the case in court is disposed. Ejamah youth president, Comrade Deacon Solomon Wai Ogosu and Ejamah Women Leader, Mrs. Rose Nworgor supported the move by the leadership of the community preventing Shell from gaining access to the polluted sites. They equally maintained that Chief Peter N. Oguru remains the paramount ruler of Ejamah community.
